First Microcystis Bloom of 2008 Reported in Chicamicomico and Transquaking River System

Two samples collected on April 22 from the Chicamicomico and Transquaking Rivers contained elevated levels of Microcystis, a toxic cyanobacteria that at times looks like flecks of green paint in the water. The sample from the Drawbridge location contained 109,051 cells/ml, ten times the level scientists define as a bloom (10,000 cells/ml). The Transquaking River has been a hotspot for Microcystis for years, so the timing and concentration of this bloom was expected.
