Microcystis Bloom Continues in the Transquaking River

A sample collected on May 1st from the Transquaking River below Higgins Millpond contained elevated levels of Microcystis, a toxic cyanobacteria that at times looks like flecks of green paint in the water. The sample contained 47,149 cells/ml, almost five times the level scientists define as a bloom (10,000 cells/ml). The Transquaking and Chicamacomico River drainage s ha ve been a hotspot for Microcystis for years, so the timing and concentration of this bloom is typical.
