Cool spring temperatures were associated with a delay in bloom conditions for Aureococcus (the causative organism for Brown Tide) in Maryland through May. Increasing water temperatures in early June led to a brief bloom in the southern bays; however, water temperatures quickly exceeded optimum growth range for Brown Tide and the bloom crashed around June 8 (See 2005 results at DNR's Brown Tide website. Category two blooms (i.e., bloom levels that have shown growth impacts to clams and scallops) were recorded at nearly all the stations south of the Ocean City Inlet.
