Fish health and Pfiesteria investigations in the Chicamacomico River.

The following summarizes on-going investigations during the past several weeks into harmful algal blooms (Pfiesteria). To date, there is no evidence of active toxicity from either of these organisms.

Chicamacomico River: Maryland DNR has sampled the river at Drawbridge Rd. five times since early September. High percentages of lesioned menhaden and the presence of Pfiesteria piscicida have consistently been observed. One sample, collected on September 18, had elevated levels of P. pisicida (217 cells / ml) and fish bioassays to test for toxicity have been initiated. Bioassays are typically run for 21 days. As of October 4, the sample had not turned toxic. Details are as follows:

DATE % Lesioned Menhaden Pfiesteria presence
(positive samples / total samples)
9/9 41% 2 / 2
9/12 65% 0 / 2
9/18 73% 2 / 2
(fish bioassay initiated on one sample)
9/23 49% 2 / 2
9/30 49% 2 / 2

Maryland DNR will next sample the Chicamacomico River on Monday, October 7.
