Blooms of Eutreptiella and Chroomonas observed on the Lower Eastern Shore

There is a bloom of the non-toxic flagellate Eutreptiella in West Ocean City Harbor at 120,575 cells/ml. In Ayers Creek, a second bloom was recorded that was dominated by a non-toxic cryptophyte Chroomonas amphioxea at 71,550 cells/ml. While such species are non-toxic, the high concentrations of algae can put significant demands on dissolved oxygen resources available to other living resources. However, cooler waters have a greater capacity for dissolved oxygen which can counter some of the potential negative bloom effects between the late autumn to early spring period of the year.
