Brown Tide Continues in Coastal Bays

On June 4, 2002 water samples were collected by Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Coastal Bays monitoring program and showed Brown tide (Aureococcus anophagefferens) at Category 2 and 3 levels south of the Ocean City inlet. Samples containing Category 2 levels were collected from Trappe Creek and Ferry Landing while Category 3 levels were found at Green Point, Public Landing and Tingles Island. The greatest densities are now being found in this region of Chincoteague Bay that has been the site of similar level blooms during 2000 and 2001. During May 2002, Brown Tide blooms were concentrated north of the Ocean City inlet in St. Martin, Manklin, Turville and Herring Creeks. The presence of the Brown tide organism continues to be found in water north of the inlet but densities have declined. Brown tide monitoring will continue into early summer.
