Fish kill in Fishing Creek (Calvert County) may be
algal related.

On June 24th a fish kill involving approximately 1,700 menhaden and several other species was investigated by Maryland Department of the Environment at Fishing Creek in Calvert County. Dissolved oxygen conditions were borderline normal at the time of the investigation and no Pfiesteria was present. However, another dinoflagellate, Karlodinium micrum, was found in bloom densities. A sample of the water with the algae tested positive for toxicity with a fish bioassay at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute Center of Marine Biotechnology (COMB). It is unclear at this time whether the localized event was caused by the algal-produced toxin.
