Fish health/Pfiesteria investigations on the Lower
Eastern Shore.

Lower Eastern Shore
On Monday September 9th, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources found 41% of 672 menhaden with ulcers at a routine sampling station on Drawbridge Road across the Chicamacomico River. There were an additional 31 fish of 5 other species collected that appeared healthy. All water samples (4 of 4) tested positive for P. pisicicida. PLO counts were low according to NCSU and Maryland DNR except for one sample with 87 PLO cells/ml. The Drawbridge Road site was revisited on Thursday 9/12 and 65% of 248 menhaden collected had ulcers. The PLO counts from NCSU were low and the water samples tested negative for both species of Pfiesteria.
