Jabez Iron Flocculant Surveys

Iron flocculant surveys are conducted in the spring and summer along the restoration reach (including SEVE-102-X, SEVE-103-X, and SEVE-104-X), and at an upstream control site (SEVE-108-X) and a site downstream of the confluence of Jabez Branch and the restoration tributary (SEVE-201-X).

The percentage cover of iron flocculant in each bin is estimated within sampleable areas of 20-m bins. An area is deemed sampleable if the water was clear and shallow enough to discern the presence and types of flocculant present. A bin was also considered unsampleable if it was entirely dry. Surveys in the restoration reach end at an impoundment at the top of the restoration, which is unsampleable due to its depth.

Additionally, iron flocculant is categorized into multiple types: benthic film, mat/filamentous, bloom, and surface sheen/foam (see photos below). Note: the bloom flocculant category was added in summer 2025 and not used during the spring 2025 surveys. The percentage contribution of each type to the total amount of flocculant present was estimated for each bin. Given that sources other than iron flocculant could potentially produce surface sheen and/or foam, that category was not included when considering percentage contributions to the total flocculant present.
